The well-being of the Fernandino children is the focus of October as the city government here celebrates National Children’s Month with the theme, “Bata Kasali Ka, Ikaw Ay Mahalaga.”

Activities for the celebration started today as Mayor Edwin D. Santiago, together with Vice Mayor Jimmy Lazatin, Councilor Nelson G. Lingat, and members of the Local Council for the Protection of Children, unveils the calendar of activities after officiating city hall employees in donating books and old toys for daycare pupils.

On October 8, participants from the city’s 35 barangays will undergo children’s rights advocates training at the Heroes Hall while a seminar on values transformation for parents will be simultaneously held in the LGU’s 49 daycare centers.

In line with the LGU’s programs for out-of-school youth, a mural painting competition shall be held on October 10 and a seminar on stress management shall be hell on October 23.

A drug awareness seminar is also scheduled in partnership with the Department of Education on October 11. On October 14, a feeding program for street children shall be held in front of the City Hall.

San Fernando will also host Children’s Congress on October 17 and October 24 at the Mini Convention of its Heroes Hall. The culminating activity will feature a seminar on the rights of children and leadership training for students on October 29.

The celebration of national children’s month is mandated by a proclamation of then President Fidel Ramos in 1993 and the Philippine constitution, which recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation-building.

In his speech, Mayor Santiago stressed that he believes that “the future lies in the hands of the next generation.” “Our role is to make sure that they will be productive not only for their own growth but for the whole nation” he said.
