CSF Supports ‘walk Caravan’ To Enlist Voters [ Thursday, 29th of May 2014 | 3 years ago ]

The City Government here led by Mayor Edwin D. Santiago welcomed yesterday the participants of “Walka-walka”, a walk caravan launched by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to raise public awareness on the need for voters to register under a new biometrics system.

The caravan is headed by Comelec spokesman James Jimenez together Region 3 Director Atty. Temmie Lambino along with the staff of the agency. Its objective is to entice voters to visit their nearest Comelec office, it started from the northern part of Luzon and will end at the southern tip of the island.

According to Jimenez, 14 percent of 53 million registered voters or 9.6 million people do not have prescribed biometrics record and they stand to be disenfranchised in the May 2016 election while the list not yet finalized, in San Fernando, the voting population from its 35 barangays has reached 94,021 as of 2013.

Mayor Santiago vowed to strongly support the program by conducting massive information campaign to help people get their records straightened out so they can vote in the next election.

“Ang pagboto ay karapatan nating lahat, kaya kailangan ibigay natin ito sa ating mga kababayan” said the Mayor underscoring that the LGU will help Comelec in establishing satellite registration centers, especially in the remote areas.

“We will also assist in informing the public of the date of registrations so that voters who are still not enrolled in biometrics system can have their pictures, signature and fingerprints taken” added Mayor Santiago.

The registration period for the May 2016 elections has started on May 6, 2014 and last until October 31, 2015, most of the 9.6 million voters without biometrics records were in Region IV-A, Region III and the National Capital Region.

The voters who failed to vote in the last two consecutive elections have been removed from the list of registered voters and they must register anew to vote in 2016.

The Walka-walka will continue from Bicol to Visayas in September and then to Mindanao in December.
