CSF’s SPES Benefits Fernandino Students [ Tuesday, 19th of July 2016 | 1 year ago ]

For years, the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) of the City of San Fernando, Pampanga has been helping the city’s disadvantaged youth to earn an income while studying.

A joint employment-bridging program of the city government and the Department of Labor and Employment, SPES aims to assist poor but deserving students in completing their education through employment during summer or Christmas vacations.

Samuel Roymari De Leon, 18, was among this year’s second batch of beneficiaries who received their SPES grants during an awarding ceremony last July 15 at Walter Mart. He was assigned to the City Employment Services Division for 25 working days.

“It was during my experience as a SPES worker in the LGU that I developed the skills that I believe will come in handy in my chosen profession,” the 3rd year accounting student said.

De Leon added that because of SPES he became more prudent in spending. “I realized how hard it is to earn.”

In an interview, Mayor Edwin D. Santiago said that the program is part of the city government’s development agenda for education and employment. “The City of San Fernando has been partnering with DOLE since the start because 40% of the salary is shouldered by them while 60% is funded by the city government”, he said.

He added that the SPES is a great training ground for the students in becoming better Fernandinos.

“At an early age, they will be able to understand how to serve other people, hone their talents and skills and learn how to be an instrument of service,” he added.

“It is much better for the young generation to be engaged in work for they learn how to be responsible citizens and service providers for their fellow Fernandinos,” the mayor said.

This year, more than 500 students benefited from the city’s SPES program.
