San Fernando Honors Solo Parents [ Thursday, 14th of April 2016 | 11 months ago ]

The City Government of San Fernando, through the initiative of the City Social Welfare and Development Office, conducted Tuesday a Solo Parents’ Day aimed at recognizing the role of every ‘single parent’ in the society.

Some 300 Fernandino solo parents from all 35 Barangays participated in the activity held at the Heroes Hall.

Mariconne Reyes, Solo Parent-Focal Person, said the program seeks to familiarize solo parents with various programs offered by the local government such as the Self-Employment Assistance – Kaunlaran (Sea-K) program of DSWD.

"SEA-K is a livelihood assistance program which aims to enhance socio-economic, entrepreneurial skills of poor families, including solo parents. Aside from that, we also involve them in various skills training," Reyes added.
The city ensures to provide benefits and privileges to solo parents and their children in compliance with Republic Act 8972 or the Solo Parents’ Welfare Act of 2000.

For his part, Mayor Edwin ‘EdSa’ Santiago, applauds every solo parent for their hard work and sacrifices in raising each of their families and sustaining the education of their children.
“Single parenting is not easy for it entails filling the role of both mother and father in the family. Kung hindi ka matatag at masipag, hindi mo kakayanin maging solo parent,” Santiago furthered.

Meanwhile, the CSWD has awarded “Gawad Parangal sa mga Natatanging Solo Parents.” to three exceptional solo parents namely Antonette Cariño (Brgy. San Pedro), Gina Alvis (Brgy. Lourdes) and Rizalina Abaya (Brgy. Sto Niño).
