San Fernando Observes Philippine Environment Month [ Tuesday, 23rd of June 2015 | 2 years ago ]
Leading the event is City Mayor Edwin D. Santiago, joined by Vice Mayor Jimmy T. Lazatin, Chairman on Committee on Environmental Protection, Natural Resources Waterways and Flooding Intervention, Councilor Benedict Jasper Lagman, City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Engr. Anele David, Philippine Information Agency Regional Director William Beltran, Mother Earth Foundation President Froilan Grate and City Local Government Operations Officer Engr. Algy Canlas.
As an initiative, the city yearly observes the environment month and as to this, CENRO Officer Engr. Anele David states the effort of the city in creating an urbanized yet environment friendly community.
With this, Mother Earth Foundation President Froilan Grate has been supporting the efforts of the city in creating a green city.
In his speech towards the students of the city, Grate pointed out the little things people could do to help save the environment such as saving water and electricity.
Meanwhile Philippine Information Agency Regional Director William Beltran reminded the youth to be responsible in their actions towards the environment.
“Ang pagkasira ng kalikasan ay pagkasira ng kinabukasan,” said Beltran.
For his part, Mayor EdSa said that one of his agenda is about environment and that he is grateful of the help Mother Earth Foundation is providing them.
“Dito sa atin, tayo ay committed at dedicated sa pagsusulong ng malinis at progresibong siyudad. Ngunit kasabay din nito, sinisigurado natin ang kaligtasan at kalinisan ng ating kapaligiran,” said Mayor EdSa.
Starting from June 13, 2015, the implementation of no plastic sando bags and styro food packaging is banned in the city, although the use of “plastic labo” is allowed only for the packaging of fresh meat such as pork, chicken, fish and beef. It can also be used as packaging for food, condiments, drinks, charcoal, salt, ice and sugar.
The city also issued penalties for those who will not comply with the ordinance. For the first offense, the city will be issuing a warning with compulsory attendance to a Values Formation Seminar, for the second offense, there will be a fine of P1, 000, and for the third offense an amount of P3, 000 will be issued, and for the fourth and succeeding offenses, there will be a cancellation of the establishment’s business permit.
This is in line with the celebration of Environment Month on June of every year. Other activities are Arbor Day on June 26, Fernandino YES-O Network Environmental Youth Camp on June 26 – 28, and Search for Model Barangays on Ecological Solid Waste Management Best Practices Awarding and Launching of Search for Cleanest Barangay Waterways on June 30.
