With the theme, “Kalamidad Paghandaan, Gutom at Malnutrisyon Agapan”, the month-long celebration will highlight activities that give emphasis on the importance of nutrition during calamities and disasters.
“Health is a major component of emergency preparedness, it is important that while we focus in disaster preparedness, we fight malnutrition particularly among infants, children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, and older persons” said Mayor Edwin D. Santiago during the unveiling of the calendar of activities held during Monday flag raising program last July 7.
City health officer Eloisa Aquino, for her part, reported that a citywide supplemental feeding program will be launched on some areas that have high malnutrition rates. “From July to December, we will monitor their health conditions.”
Other highlights during the month of July includes: interactive lecture on nutrition program for families of nutritionally depressed barangay and lecture-demo on urban gardening from July 7-16, nutrition program management seminar on July 9-11, nutrition emergency orientation seminar on July 15-23, little doctors and nurses training on July 21-29, and basic support seminar for organized women on july 22-30.
The city will also start its six-month-long supplemental program for pregnant women this month.
Nutrition Month is observed every July of each year pursuant to Presidential Decree 491, in a bid to focus attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
