Independence Day In CSF Shines Despite Weather [ Friday, 13th of June 2014 | 3 years ago ]

Despite the gloomy weather yesterday, the City Government here led by Mayor Edwin D. Santiago commemorated the 116th Independence Day with a program attended by at least five thousand Fernandinos coming from all walks of life.

For the opening act, Mayor Santiago together with city officials and employees conducted a wreath laying ceremony for the monuments of both national and local heroes erected at the Heroes Hall compound. This was witnessed by attendees coming from a cross-section of society including government officials, military and police personnel, students, private sector representatives, among others.

In his speech, the mayor stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices of our fallen heroes saying that “it is our duty to protect their gift [freedom] to us”.

He also encouraged the public especially the youth sector to “emulate the lives of our forefathers and keep the spirit of nationalism alive.”

He also underscored that in modern times the “spirit of independence” can be measured through social economic status.

“Sa panahon ngayon hindi ka malaya kung ikaw ay nahihirapan kaya naman kasabay ng pagpapahalaga natin sa ating Kalayaan ay ang mga programa at proyekto para sa ating mga mamamayan” said Santiago.

The program also highlighted a inspirational talk from Alex Lacson, a Filipino lawyer, author, lecturer, philanthropist and politician best known as the author of “12 Little Things Every Filipino Can Do To Help Our Country.”

In an interview, Lacson thanked the city government for showing its love for the country remarking that “good governance is reflected through private sector’s participation in government endeavors which is very evident in San Fernando.”
