CSF Gears Up For Nutrition Month [ Friday, 15th of July 2016 | 8 months ago ]

The City Government of San Fernando has lined up activities for nutrition month slated this July.

The month-long activities kicked off today during the Flag raising ceremony held at the City Hall.

With the theme “First 1000 days ni Baby, Pahalagahan para sa Malusog na kinabukasan”, more than 20 activities were prepared by the City Health Office (CHO) to create awareness on the importance of proper infant and young child feeding practices, particularly exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months and giving appropriate complementary food after six months while continuing breastfeeding.

In an interview, Mayor Edwin “EdSa” Santiago said the theme is very significant because there is a link between undernutrition, especially stunting, in the first years of a child’s life and his overall growth in the later years.

“Hindi lang mga kabataan ang inaalagaan natin, nakatuon tayo sa nutrisyon maging ng kanilang mga magulang, at isinusulong natin ang breast feeding” he said.

Activities include Fernandino Master Gulay, a cooking competition featuring local produce; a breastfeeding in the workplace seminar; dance exercise; poem recital; an orientation on nutrition in emergency cluster; nutria-quiz and poster making contest; best hataw fitness exercise (zumba); supplemental feeding program for pregnant women; and inter-barangay biggest loser challenge.

The city will also launch a 90 day supplemental feeding program on the following barangay: San Jose, Dolores, Quebiawan, Sindalan, Pulung Bulu, Dele Paz Norte, Sta Lucia, and San Nicolas.

This LGU’s Breastfeeding Council Executive Committee will be presented on July 29 following the launching of Big Latch Program.

Other programs are Youth Camp Assembly and Orientation of Barangay Captains on Basic Nutrition.

It will culminate with a Nutrition Summit to be hosted by the CHO.

The observance of the National Nutrition Month is pursuant to Presidential Decree 49, the National Nutrition Act of the Philippines, signed on June 25, 1974.
