The city government of San Fernando, Pampanga under the leadership of Mayor Edwin D. Santiago will distribute capital assistance amounting to P1.4 million to aspiring micro-entrepreneurs.

According to City Social Welfare Development Officer Iris Biliwang, more than two hundred Fernandinos may get as much as P5,000 depending on the type of business they intend to put up like e-load services, sari-sari vending, rice retailing, uling selling, manicure and pedicure services, among others.

“Under the bottom up budgeting scheme, we received funds from DSWD. We will utilize this through Self-Employment Assistance Kaunlaran (SEA-K) program.”

Target participants of the program are poor families enlisted in the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTS-PR), prioritizing Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries.

Biliwang added that under Mayor Santiago’s sustainable livelihood program, these beneficiaries now have the opportunity to earn through small-scale business which can be their main source of living.

“The mayor’s [Santiago] instruction is to launch community-based capacity building program and seek measures to improve the program participants’ socio-economic status.”

In an interview, Mayor Santiago said that “employment programs” are his number one priority under “Sapat na Pangkabuhayan sa mga Fernandino Tungo sa Maunlad na Pamumuhay.”

“Ginagawa natin ito para maging pangkalahatan at pangmatagalan ang kaunlaran dito sa San Fernando, dapat lahat ng mamamayan ay may disenteng hanap buhay” added the mayor.

He emphasized that this effort aims to further assist underprivileged families in uplifting their well-being for them to reach self-sufficiency.

These beneficiaries will undergo social preparation and capacity-building workshops before deciding what livelihood to venture into. They will also attend series of seminars in values transformation, skills trainings, financial and time management.
